In the August 2012 issue of the North American Hunting Dog (NAVHDA) magazine, Dr. Lisa Boyer (DVM) was asked about health issues between a new puppy and children. Dr. Boyer's response was provided, with her permission to reprint below.

Great question! I'm glad to see you doing your research prior to bringing a new puppy into your house. The good news is that although there are diseases that can be transmitted from dogs to people, the vast majority of them are totally preventable with routine veterinary care. Puppies put everything in their mouths and so do young children. Most of the diseases of concern happen because of a transmission from a dog's feces to a child's mouth or thorugh a cut in the child's skin. If you get your puppy at 8 weeks oif age, ensure that it has been tested at your veterinarian for parasites and appropriately dewormed. Teach your children to wash thir hands before eating or putting things in their mouths. Pick up dog feces daily. One of the other risks to your child is regarding dog bites. Young puppies like to nip, especially little children who move fast and are playful. Teach the puppy not to bite (there are many techniques available).
