Distemper Outbreak At Animal Services Building
Posted: 4:25 pm EST February 2, 2010Updated: 6:17 pm EST February 2, 2010
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- There's a deadly disease inside Orange County's Animal Services building. The center on Conroy Road has at least seven confirmed cases of distemper, with more cases suspected. Now the center is trying to tell pet owners to keep their dogs away.
As of February 2, Orange County Animal Services has suspended its public spay neuter clinic. It’s not scheduled to re-open until April 5, because the shelter doesn't want to expose anyone's pet the potentially deadly virus.
The dogs all appear to be healthy, but Orange County Animal Services is warning potential pet owners that any one of the dogs at their center could have been exposed to canine distemper. “I'll just go ahead and help him out and do the best that I can,” Diaz said.
That's the same thing Animal Services is doing. It has stepped up its cleaning practices with a special cleanser and increased rounds to look for sick animals. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea and nasal discharge, but the method isn't a guarantee.
“Unfortunately, some of the animals that have been adopted are coming back with the distemper virus and they have to be humanely euthanized,” explained Vanessa Bouffard, Orange County Animal Services...
