American Kennel Club Duncan Received his AKC-CD on June 21, 1997 What happened to Duncan's AKC-CDX? Memorial Day in 1999 marks the beginning of the end of Duncan's competitive obedience career. While strolling through a muddy puddle on his way into the woods in a local park, Duncan stepped on a broken glass beer bottle. The glass severed a major tendon on his right front paw, in addition to splaying open his paw pad. Luckily we were less than a mile from a veterinarian's office that just happened to be open on the holiday and the veterinarian was in attending to post-surgical cases. In emergency surgery, the tendon and wound were repaired. Healing progressed well, but obedience training came to an abrupt halt for a few months. Once healed we began obedience training for UD competition. Although there were no signs of any problems with the healing of his paw, Duncan began refusing to jump. This was out of the ordinary for him, although, not his most favorite training, jumps are required for competitive CDX and UT obedience classes.
It became obvious to me that even though he
could be coaxed to jump, he wasn't having fun at it anymore, I assume it
must have been painful to land on the paw. So with that, competition
ended... there were other things to do that were more fun. |
